How to find passion and purpose in your life

Purpose and passion are things we all covet; we hope to come across them just as we hope to come across a winning lottery ticket or a magical unicorn that agrees to pay our mortgage. But discovering purpose and passion is, fortunately, much more realistic: they’re easy to find as long as you know where to look.

So, how do you start your search? You don’t need to pack your bags and get out your treasure map. You only need to do the following:

Engage in something you enjoy: It’s hard to find passion (or purpose) in something you don’t love. This doesn’t mean you need to quit your “stuck in a rut of a job” and throw all financial caution to the wind. But passion and purpose aren’t always synonymous with a paycheck: you can find them through your friends and family, through hobbies, through volunteering, and through starting your own business.

Engage in something that makes a difference: Of course, enjoyment is far from the only factor: you might love to sleep, but dedicating yourself to that isn’t exactly the way to change the world. Look for something that matters, that inspires you, that moves you and get involved.

Engage in something practical: While we should all aim high, don’t make your aim so lofty that you miss opportunities grounded in reality. If you aspire to save all the rescue dogs in your local dogs home, for instance, maybe just start with one or even by volunteering there. Saving every other dog? You can build up to that.

Make a plan: Purpose and passion won’t come looking for you: finding them is on your shoulders. And this starts with a plan. Following the above steps helps steer you in the right direction, helping you to understand the areas where you’re innately dedicated. Now write down what you want to do and tell others – that makes things more likely to stick.
