Fear is a natural part of life; all of us have it, even those of us who pretend we don’t. It comes in tons of variety. You may be afraid of heights or death or drowning or you may be afraid of clowns or spiders or public speaking. But, while it’s impossible to completely remove the emotion of fear, it’s very possible to overcome it and keep it from dominating your life.
So, how do you do this? No, a lobotomy is not the answer! Instead:
Accept that life has uncertainty: You don’t have the monopoly on worrying; all of us do it. Remember this: every life comes with uncertainty no matter how much we wish it didn’t. Thus, control what you can control and don’t worry about what you can’t. It’s futile, after all.
Face your fear: Of course, the oldest trick in the book to overcoming fear is to face it! Why does this work? Because avoiding things that scare you makes fear that much more powerful. It strokes its ego! But facing it does the opposite: it takes the power from fear and gives it back to you.
Expect things to be anticlimactic: When you do face your fear, don’t be surprised if it’s not as bad as you imagined. Fear is funny like that – sometimes, the fear is much worse than the actual thing you’re afraid of. But you can’t realise that until you have your fear front and centre.
Breathe: Breathing is our favorite hobby – you’re breathing right now. But most of us look at it as an involuntary process rather than a way to overcome fear. Yet, breathing is highly effective at quieting nerves and anxiety. Do it deeply and mindfully for the best results.
Learn: Sometimes, the only way to stop being afraid is to learn about what you’re fearful of. Most of us fear things we don’t understand. So go and learn about your fear. You may be surprised at how harmless it is.
