The average woman feels as though she wears a cape, a red and flowing cloak that blows in the wind. She wears this cape like a badge, a reminder that she is super, able to do as much as she can each and every day. She never wants to hang this cape on the proverbial hook, letting herself off the hook in the process. The average woman is indeed super, but she still can’t do it all.
Maybe this is you – you struggle with the idea that you’re not Superwoman. Maybe you strive to be everything to everyone. But this isn’t realistic: when you act like Superwoman, attention to self falls by the wayside. And you set yourself up not to fly, but to crash and burn.
So, how do you avoid this implosion? First of all, forgive yourself and remind yourself that, while you have Superwoman tendencies, you are not omnipotent. Then consider the following five tricks:
Say no when you need to: It’s okay to decline an invitation or tell a friend that you can’t do the favour they ask. It’s okay to tell your boss you can’t stay late at work or that you can’t take on an extra project because your schedule is already jampacked. It’s okay to say no to others. And say “you” in the process.
Allow failure: You are a failure – we all are! Embrace this. It’s how we learn. Don’t strive to be perfect, but aim to be perfectly imperfect.
Show your vulnerabilities: Everyone is vulnerable (even Superman had his kryptonite). Strong people show their vulnerabilities; weak people pretend that they don’t exist at all.
Look at the truth: The truth about Superwoman is simple: she’s fictional. And she’s fictional for a reason – no one can do it all….no one.
Practice self-love: Do something for you – get a manicure, get a massage, take a spa weekend. Even Superwoman knows how to treat herself .
